Being moved from your prison for healthcare

The health services available at each prison are different. If you need treatment or care that’s not available at your prison, you might be moved to another prison.

If there is treatment or care you need that can’t be provided in prison, you might be moved to a hospital. The hospitals you could be taken to include St Vincent’s Hospital and Sunshine Hospital, depending on which prison you’re in.

Mental health

Some prisons have special mental health care units. If you have a serious mental health issue, you could be transferred to:

  • Dame Phyllis Frost Centre (Marrmak Unit)
  • Melbourne Assessment Prison (MAP) (Acute Assessment Unit)
  • Ravenhall Correctional Centre (Ballerrt Yeram-boo-ee Forensic Mental Health Unit)
  • Port Phillip Prison (St Paul’s Unit)
  • Thomas Embling Hospital

Thomas Embling Hospital is what’s called a secure forensic mental health hospital. It is a hospital run by Forensicare and is a hospital for people with criminal charges and severe mental health issues. If you are taken into Thomas Embling while you were on remand or serving a sentence, you are not allowed to leave.
