Visiting someone in another prison
You can have a visit with a person in another prison in Victoria if you have a confirmed, long-standing and personal relationship with them. This is called an inter-prison visit.
Inter-prison visits can be in person, by video or by telephone.
You are allowed a maximum of 1 inter-prison visit each month. Visits can be for up to1 hour.
Who can I visit in another prison?
You can have a visit with a person in another prison if you have a confirmed, long-standing, personal relationship.
Part 3.04 of the Deputy Commissioner’s Instructions has a list of examples, but there may be other relationships that are allowed:
- Spouse (person you are married to)
- De facto partner
- Parent
- Child
- Sibling
How do I arrange an inter-person visit?
You and the other person will both need to apply to your own prisons to have a visit. You should speak to your case worker or unit manager about how to apply.
When you apply to your prison for an inter-prison visit, make sure you give information and details about the type of relationship you have with the other person.
The General Managers of both prisons approve inter-prison visits. They will look at whether:
- You have a confirmed, long-standing, personal relationship.
- You and the other person both want to have the visit.
In-person inter-prison visits will happen at the prison with the higher security rating.
