Security classifications/ratings
Summary: How security grades are decided and how to apply to change them.
Every person in prison is given a classification or security rating from the time they enter prison.
The laws and procedures about classification come from Division 2, Part 3 of the Corrections Regulations 2019 (Vic) and the Sentence Management Manual.
In Victorian prisons, there are 6 levels of security ratings that you can be assigned:
A1 | High security |
A2 | Maximum security |
B | Medium security |
C | Restricted minimum security |
C1 | Minimum security |
C2 | Minimum security |
Your classification will be reviewed throughout your time in prison, including routine reviews as well as if you are accused of being involved in an incident.
Important:
- You have the right to have your classification reviewed at least once every year. This comes from Section 47(1)(l) of the Corrections Act 1986 (Vic).
- You can apply to have your classification changed at any time.
