Rights in prison

Everyone in prison has important basic rights.

These basic rights can’t be taken away as punishment and apply to everyone in prison, including people in management, segregation or the slot.

Some of these rights have been made for people in prison. Others apply to everyone in Victoria, Australia or even the world, regardless of if they are in prison or not.

This section will focus on rights that come from:

  1. Section 47 of the Corrections Act 1986 (Vic)
  2. Victorian Charter of Human Rights
  3. International law
