What is sexual harassment?

You can complain to VEOHRC if you have been sexually harassed by someone working at your prison. This law comes from the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic).

Sexual harassment is when you receive unwelcome sexual behaviour from someone that made you feel offended, humiliated or intimidated, and a reasonable person could have predicted you would feel that way.

Examples of sexual harassment could include:

  • An unwelcome sexual advance or request for sexual favours
  • Sexually suggestive behaviour, like staring, or making sexual comments or jokes
  • Brushing up against someone, touching, fondling or hugging
  • Showing someone sexual images or objects
  • Sexual assault

If you think someone working at your prison has sexually harassed you, you can make a complaint to the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission (VEOHRC). Use the links on the left side of this page for more information about:

  • Asking for information from VEOHRC
  • Making a complaint to VEOHRC

Remember: you can only complain to VEOHRC about sexual harassment from someone working at your prison, not from another person who is incarcerated.
