Complaints about personal information privacy

A complaint about personal information privacy is about how staff at Corrections Victoria or your prison handle, use or share your personal information.

Personal information is things that identify you, like your photograph, name, date of birth, nationality, religion, family details, criminal history and reports about you.

Examples of personal information privacy complaints might be:

  • Prison staff looking at or sharing your personal information without your permission and without a good reason
  • The prison collecting personal information about you that is not relevant to what they need
  • The prison keeping inaccurate personal information about you

There are 3 steps you can take to complain about personal information privacy:

  1. Complain to the Privacy Contact Officer at your prison
  2. Complain to the Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS) Information Privacy Unit
  3. Complain to the Office of the Victorian Information Commissioner (OVIC)

Important: if you’re in a private prison, they might have their own privacy complaint process. You should speak to your case worker or unit manager at your prison to find out how to make privacy complaint.
